Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure briefed on Lootah Biofuels’ efforts in sustainable energy development

  • Lootah Biofuels supports the objectives of the National Biofuels Policy and the UAE Energy Diversification Strategy
  • The company commits to supporting the Ministry’s roadmap for the transition to sustainable aviation fuel 

A high-level delegation from the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, led by H.E. Eng. Saif Ghobash, Assistant Undersecretary for the Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources Sector, was briefed on the sustainable solutions offered by Lootah Biofuels, a pioneer in the circular economy that produces biofuels from used cooking oil (UCO), highlighting its efforts in innovating clean energy solutions were in line with the UAE’s efforts in transitioning to renewable energy and the strategic initiative to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The visit, which was attended by a number of officials from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, is part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to learn about pioneering clean energy experiences, achievements and challenges in the field and to support partnerships between the public and private sectors to strengthen the UAE’s position as a global economic hub and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Sharjah Literary Agency (SLA), the first-of-its-kind in the Arab region dedicated to the promotion of Arabic literature, brought together some of the world’s leading literary agents at the ongoing 42nd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) for a dialogue to enlighten and inform publishing and creative industry stakeholders in the Middle East. During SLA’s participation, they informed and inspired attendees on ways they can create quality content while protecting their rights as well as their intellectual property and creative assets in a tech-driven world.

The evolving role of literary agents in the digital era

During a panel discussion on Thursday, SLA Director, Tamer Said offered a comprehensive overview of the ever-evolving role of literary agents in the digital age. He was joined by London-based literary agent Sophie Hicks, who represents New York Times and Sunday Times bestsellers on both adult and children’s lists, and is a member of The Book Society and Women in Publishing; and Yasmina Jreissati, founder and director of Raya Agency from Lebanon who provided valuable insights into the changing landscape of the publishing world and the opportunities presented by the digital era.

“We are in desperate need of translations but finding funds is like finding a small fountain in a big desert,” observed Lucien Leitess, founder of Unionsverlag Publishing and winner of the 2023 Tarjuman Award for translation, at a symposium on the Turjuman Awards titled “Why translate?” at the ongoing Sharjah International Book Fair. Also in the panel were Lebanese academic Sobhi Al-Boustani, Italian translator Isabella Camera D’Afflitto, Spanish translator Luis Miguel Perez Cañada, and German translator Hartmut Fahndrich.
