An Italian researcher working on cognitive anthropology, cultural evolution, and computational social science, and an Emirati professor debated the impacts of social media and its intricate relationship with contemporary society during a thought-provoking panel discussion at the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2023).

“We are in desperate need of translations but finding funds is like finding a small fountain in a big desert,” observed Lucien Leitess, founder of Unionsverlag Publishing and winner of the 2023 Tarjuman Award for translation, at a symposium on the Turjuman Awards titled “Why translate?” at the ongoing Sharjah International Book Fair. Also in the panel were Lebanese academic Sobhi Al-Boustani, Italian translator Isabella Camera D’Afflitto, Spanish translator Luis Miguel Perez Cañada, and German translator Hartmut Fahndrich.

ثمّن عدد من الأكاديميين والباحثين العرب والأجانب الدور المهم الذي يلعبه المستشرقون في نشر اللغة العربية في أوروبا، وقدموا تجربة بولندا وإيطاليا كنموذج في الإقبال على تعلمها، مشيرين إلى أن عدد دارسي اللغة العربية فيهما ارتفع على مدى ثلاثين عامًا إلى أرقام قياسية، وكشفوا أن الشغف كان سر ازدهار اللغة العربية في الغرب.
