 At the Sharjah International Book Fair, the Bonsai Tree workshop teaches young minds the art of mindfulness, sustainability and imagination through hands-on creativity

At the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2025), children aged eight to fourteen took part in the “Bonsai Tree” workshop, a nature-inspired craft session that doubled as a lesson in patience, creativity, and sustainability.

The activity was an imaginative exploration of how simple materials can teach valuable life lessons. Each participant received a small model resembling a skeletal bonsai tree. Clusters of aluminium wires were twisted together and fixed to a wooden base, evoking a leafless autumn tree.

The dish, like the author herself, draws flavour from many worlds.

Emirati writer and traveller Faisal Al Suwaidi urged audiences at the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) to reconnect with the UAE’s roots by shifting focus away from the glittering skyscrapers to the smaller towns and villages that have shaped its identity. Speaking during a session organised by Sharjah Public Libraries, he challenged the dominant image of the UAE as defined by skyscrapers and rapid development, calling for greater attention to the people and places often overlooked in public narratives.
