Armed with frosting, fondant and a lot of frolic, children learn how to turn chocolate and vanilla muffins into edible ‘burgers’ as part of a culinary workshop at the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair

Sharjah, November 7, 2025
Laughter and the sweet aroma of freshly baked muffins filled the air at the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair, as young participants rolled up their sleeves for a delectable “Burger Muffins” workshop, turning ordinary baked goods into creative, burger-shaped treats.
“The idea is to let children have a great time making their own burger muffins, mixing the fun of baking with the excitement of building burgers,” said Amal Sabrawi, the instructor of the workshop. “The workshop lets them get creative by layering cheese, veggies, and toppings inside fluffy muffins turning them into mini edible masterpieces. With hands-on cooking and playful imagination, this activity will keep them not only smiling and happy but also proud of their creativity.”
Using a simple set of ingredients: vanilla and chocolate muffins, sugar dough and colorful buttercream, children followed a step-by-step process to assemble their sweet “burgers.” They cut muffins in half, shaped chocolate muffins into “patties” using a circle cutter, and crafted slices of “cheese” from sugar dough. Green and red buttercream stood in for lettuce and tomato, adding colour and texture to their imaginative creations.
Vaibhav Raj, one of the participants, called it “the most fun experience I’ve ever had with muffins,” adding that he loved “making something that looks like a burger but tastes like dessert.”
Fellow seventh grader from a Sharjah National School, Mufaddal Mohammed, said: “It was amazing to repurpose frosting as ketchup and lettuce, it felt like building a real burger.” Meanwhile, for his classmate Mathew Sleeby, the best part was “putting it all together and showing it to my parents – it looked so real they almost tried to eat it like a burger!”
Running until 16 November, Sharjah International Book Fair 2025 is organised by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) under the theme ‘Between You and a Book’. Visitors will get the opportunity to experience more than 300 cultural events led by 158 Arab and international guests, 750+ workshops in Arabic and English covering writing, editing, publishing, and creativity and 85 stage performances from 12 countries.
