The 16th Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (SCRF) features a unique theatrical highlight with Winged Wonder, a roaming performance by the Canadian street theatre company Les Chasseurs de Rêves. Twice a day, a giant bird puppet takes flight at Expo Centre Sharjah, its wings flapping gracefully as performers Simon Riouy and Lauriane Houle interact with festival goers.

The 30-minute show combines puppetry, circus arts, and interactive theatre, captivating children and adults alike. Riouy operates the towering puppet from above using mechanical levers, while Houle engages the audience, treating the bird as a beloved companion.

The event was a celebration of her new title The House of Wisdom, which won the Sharjah Children’s Book Award in the English-language category for ages 7-13 and the prestigious BolognaRagazzi Award 2025. The festival, under the theme “Dive into Books,” continues at Expo Centre Sharjah until May 4.

The workshop at Sharjah Children Reading Festival’s cookery corner teaches kids how simple ingredients and a little imagination can turn into fresh, colourful pasta

Sharjah, April 28, 2025 

Cooking met creativity at the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (SCRF) on Saturday as young chefs rolled up their sleeves for the Colourful Pasta Making workshop at Cookery Corner.

Led by Noha Elkhouly, an instructor from Skill Deer, the lively session taught children how to make fresh pasta from scratch, using natural colours and simple techniques to turn everyday ingredients into edible works of art. “We’re teaching them that homemade cooking can be healthier and more fun,” said the Egyptian cooking enthusiast. “The focus is on giving kids hands-on experience — from kneading the dough to measuring ingredients and even understanding simple techniques like spreading and shaping.”

It was a day of balancing creativity, structure, and imagination at the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival on Saturday for scores of budding designers who gathered with tapes, bamboo skewers, and boundless creativity to take on a fun challenge: solve real-world problems through design thinking.

The hands-on workshop, “Think and Design”, saw children tasked with a deceptively simple challenge: build the tallest, strongest tower possible using only bamboo skewers and craft materials. The exercise was designed not just to entertain, but to introduce basic principles of design thinking, engineering, and problem-solving.
