Humpy and Yifan want more moves like Global Chess League for women players

Dubai, June 29, 2023: The Global Chess League, a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, is at a crucial juncture, with the SG Alpine Warriors leading the lot at 15 points, closely followed by the Ganges Grandmasters at 12 points while upGrad Mumba Masters are behind in third spot.

With just 10 matches to go before the all-important final, the excitement rises in the league about who will be competing for the crown of the inaugural edition. While the league’s unique mixed-team format has drawn many praises from various sections of the chess world, leading women players like Grandmaster (GM) Koneru Humpy from the upGrad Mumba Masters and Grandmaster (GM) Hou Yifan from Ganges Grandmasters feel that it is just the first step towards a more equitable chess ecosystem.

Speaking about the overall state of women’s chess GM Yifan said, “The general situation of women’s chess has evolved dramatically in the past few decades. I remember when I was young, most of the events for women were only be FIDE official events and very few invitational events. Even for some open events, the chances for women players to win it weren’t as good as today.”

Zim Cyber City bags naming rights for inaugural edition of Afro T10

Much anticipated tournament from July 20-29 to be called Zim Cyber City Zim Afro T10

Cricket’s fastest format, T10, is heading to Zimbabwe and a much-awaited 10-over tournament now has a title sponsor.The Zim Afro T10 have announced that the tournament’s naming rights have been given to real estate giants, Zim Cyber City.

The Zim Cyber City Zim Afro T10, in association with T Ten Global Sports, represents franchise cricket’s first foray into Zimbabwe. It will commence on July 20 and the grand finale is scheduled for July 29, with all the games taking place in Harare.

Carlsen’s spectacular victory over Anand helps Warriors regain Global Chess League lead

Magnus Carlsen lifted SG Alpine Warriors to the top of Global Chess League with a morale-boosting victory over Ganges Grandmasters while beating VishwanathanAnand in probably the match of the tournament. A huge turnout at Le Meridien got what they came for as Carlsen, playing with black, overturned the tables in a memorable endgame.

Ganges Grandmasters took the lead but, thanks to the unstoppable Warriors prodigy Praggnanandhaa R, the team managed to strike back in a critical moment. In what turned out to be the endgame for the history books, which saw two queens promoted by White and a knight promoted by Black, Carlsen managed to win 10-8 as Warriors displaced the Grandmasters on the leaderboard as both sides look headed to the final as well.
