RAK Hospital’s lifestyle division helps 4000 people lose weight every year
3rd March 2021; Ras Al Khaimah, UAE: Helping organizations become healthier by providing their employees year long health management and lifestyle strategies, Arabian Wellness & Lifestyle Management, the wellness division of RAK hospital helps 4000 individuals lose weight every year.
“We work with several organizations across the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah with the aim of providing preventive care and corporate health. Over the years, it has been observed that besides employee health improvement, the benefits of Corporate Health and Wellness initiatives include increased productivity, improved employee morale, reduced healthcare costs, and reduced absenteeism”, commented Dr Raza Siddiqui, Executive Director, RAK Hospital.
The evaluations conducted by Arabian Wellness found that over 62% individuals came into the overweight or obese category. The major contributing factor for this remained sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise. Amongst the 10,000 people who were screened in 2019-20, 39% were rated to have cardiac risk as a result of poor lifestyle habits and being either diabetic or hypertensive. As a consequence of this poor health status, 34% of the employee workforce had low levels of productivity due to being absent from work frequently, owing to medical reasons.
Overweight and obesity is defined as excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of above 30, or who are over 20% above the maximum weight range for their height, or who have a waist measurement that exceeds either their hips or chest are categorized as overweight or obese.
As regards the Arabian Wellness Corporate Wellness initiative, Prof Adrian Kennedy said, “After assessing the employees on various health parameters, employees who are overweight or obese are immediately counseled on how to lose weight and are given a weight loss diet to follow and a target to achieve. In addition, our Nutritionists conduct Weight Loss Management classes for this population on a regular basis guiding them on exercise, diet and other vital weight-loss strategies”.
