DUBAI, UAE, 14 December 2020: Huawei has announced its short-list of 20 apps from across the MEA region for the global Huawei HMS App Innovation Contest, AppsUP, with the final winners to be revealed on December 15th.

The Huawei HMS App Innovation Contest, AppsUP is a mobile app development competition organized by Huawei that aims to inspire and challenge global developers to create innovative apps. To do this they are encouraged to use the full suite of app development tools and resources available through HMS Core. All apps submitted must be integrated with at least one HMS Core development kit to be eligible for the contest. The developers of the winning apps will share in a total of $1 million in competition prizes.

The Huawei HMS App Innovation Contest is split into five categories: Best App with five winners; Best Game with three winners; Best Social Impact App also with three winners; Most Popular App according to the number of downloads and voting; And the top 12 Honorable Mentions.

The competition attracted interested from across the region and the shortlist is made up of seven entries from Egypt; three from Morocco; one from Tunisia; two from Algeria; three from Pakistan and four from South Africa.

The shortlist apps are:

RafiQ, is a virtual assistant that understands Arabic voice commands in a user’s local dialect. It can organize your life, book an Uber, order food, get product prices and more. From Egyptian company RafiQ.

Colorwheel, is designed to help consumers with everyday outfits and fashion choices using algorithms based on the color wheel to help you piece items that work together. From Egyptian developer Omar Ayman.

Katamars + Orsozoxi, provides orthodox users with many books needed throughout the year coupled with the Katameros daily readings. Search for a verse, receive, copy and share spiritual messages. Developed by Beshoy Adel from Egypt.

A letter of happiness, this app contains 60,000 inspirational messages, articles, images, daily notifications, and more, to keep users uplifted in their lives. Developed by Mohamed Alaa El-Dein Mohamed from Egypt.

Q Dictionary, is an English-Arabic bidirectional dictionary that can translate from other apps and also use the camera offline. From Leapile Mobile Developers of Egypt.

Ordera, is a pickup and drive-thru ordering experience. Pick up your order or have it delivered to your car and win rewards every time. From Egyptian developer Ordera.

Decipher Word, is a children’s word puzzle that helps youngsters to improve their general knowledge and much more by searching for hidden words. Developed by Mjhr from Morocco.

Photo Editor, enables users to edit photos with professional tools allowing consumers to even shape the face and body, easily, quickly, and simply. From Med tDeveloper of Morocco.

Women Workout, offers women professional courses, workouts for all levels, guides, and weight records to help lose weight. Created by Med tDeveloper from Morocco.

Med, is care path management app that helps doctors to manage appointments, see statistics, manage profiles, and more. Patients can also book online, access a medical directory and more. Developed by Smart Med SA from Tunisia.

Color Fill Puzzle is a free, simple and easy to play puzzle game. Players must paint a board of squares using one color and without passing a fixed number of steps. From Algerian developer Guenoapps.

Almosally, is an Islamic prayer time app from Algerian software company Madarsoft and is used by 17 million people globally.

9arib is a social media app that allows users to publish posts, call to actions and talk to strangers near you, no signup needed because your phone is the client and server. From one-man Algerian developer team_sba.

FPS Encounter Shooting 2020, is an action-packed gun shooting game with realistic environments and multiple modes like survival, with many guns and skins, from Pakistani developer, Abstron Pvt Ltd.

Bike Stunt Tricks Master is a free mobile game from Pakistani game developers, The Knights. It allows players to join millions of gamers who love to simulate bike games and want to become pro bike riders.

Deaf Sign Language App, enables users to learn sign language by simply saying a word or phrase to communicate with the deaf community easily and effectively. Created by a team of university students in Pakistan.

Slug Hunter is a 3D isometric game from one-man South African game developer, Blue Desert Studios. Gamers play as a lab assistant who was left behind on Mars amidst a man-eating slug infestation.

Gauntlet, isfrom South African solo developer Zane Espin of Blue Desert Studios and gives players the chance to protect mankind against infectious alien eggs.

Huawei has allocated $1 million from the Shining Star developer program as prize money for the competition, with a total of $200,000 on offer in each region. Awards will be made of $15,000 each for the top five apps; $15,000 each for the top three games; and $15,000 each for the top three apps with the best social impact. The most popular app will win $5,000, while 12 honorable mentions will receive $2,500 each.
