UAEBBY calls to children’s authors to compose inspiring messages for International Children’s Book Day 2022

Sharjah, 14 September 2020:The UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY) has called on Emirati and UAE-based children’s book authors to pen a message about the joys of reading that appeals to their young audience and depicts books as lifelong companions, to celebrate International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) 2022.

UAEBBY will select one winning message to apply to the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) for sponsoring ICBD 2022, which will compete with other IBBY local chapters worldwide who will be applying to win this prestigious opportunity.


International Children’s Book Day is celebrated every year on April 2, which is also famous children’s author Hans Christian Anderson’s birthday, to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children’s books. Each year a different chapter of IBBY is given the opportunity to be the international sponsor of ICBD. The UAE chapter’s message has been selected previously for the ICBD sponsorship in 2015.


Authors wishing to participate must submit their messages before September 30, 2020, to The message must be written in classic Arabic style in any literary form, such as prose or poetry, and must have a title or a ‘motto’. Finally, the text submitted should be
500 words on average. Authors will need to submit their entries along with a short bio, their contact details, and a high-resolution photograph of themselves.

The UAEBBY may edit and proofread the winning message, if necessary. The entity also reserves the rights to use the winning message in any activity it deems suitable, while giving due credit to the author. The UAEBBY will announce the winner at the 39th Sharjah International Book Fair.

Marwa Al Aqroubi, UAEBBY President, remarked: “International Children’s Book Day is a significant occasion that turns the spotlight on the indispensable role of books in promoting a love of science, knowledge and culture in young readers. We, at the UAEBBY, strongly believe that powerful words leave a lasting impression on individuals, as most of us find ourselves turning to quotes, sentences or passages that have shaped the way we think and act. We look forward to seeing new compelling messages making their way to people’s minds and awaken the child in every reader irrespective of their age. And so, we call on the creatives in the UAE to help us bring home this international honour, once again.”
