Bee’ah and Polyeco Join Hands to Tackle Marine Pollution, Strengthen Efforts for Circular Economy
The two waste management experts have built the first marine waste treatment facility in the region to produce alternative raw materials
Sharjah, 06 July 2020: Bee’ah, the Middle East’s sustainability pioneer, and Polyeco, a European environmental protection company, have built an advanced Alternative Raw Material Facility in Bee’ah’s Waste Management Complex in Al Sa’jaa, Sharjah which will be operational this month. Both entities are also joining efforts to explore future collaboration in waste management solutions for marine pollution as per the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) – of which the UAE is a signatory.
The announcement marks a major milestone in both entities’ efforts to protect our oceans, while developing the UAE’s circular economy through specialised waste treatment and recycling capabilities. The new Alternative Raw Material facility will treat and process maritime waste and marine-related hazardous waste. The zero-waste process produces a byproduct of alternative raw materials. Bee’ah and Polyeco will also explore other areas of possible collaboration in maritime pollution such as oil spill response services and green ship recycling.
HE Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of Bee’ah, said: “Bee’ah is a staunch believer in the necessity of co-creation and a holistic approach to solving the world’s greatest environmental challenges. We are delighted to collaborate with Polyeco in order to develop sustainable solutions for alternative raw materials across a variety of industries, while addressing the issue of marine pollution. We have already established a reputation for waste management on land and through this partnership we hope to expand our already extensive portfolio of zero-waste solutions in the open waters.”
Athanasios Polychronopoulos, Executive Chairman of Global Operations of Polyeco, said: “Bee’ah and Polyeco share the same values and vision for sustainability, growth, and business transparency. The alliance highlights the importance of teamwork to broaden our focus for evolving environmental challenges and demands. This partnership will lay the foundations of Polyeco’s expansion in the Middle East, and introduce our exceptional solutions and sophisticated technology.”
A comparative conformance study has been undertaken by international accredited registrar and classification organisation, DNV GL, to ensure that the Alternative Raw Materials facility conforms to international benchmarks and replicates the success of Polyeco’s facilities in Greece.
