Mobile Beach Library brings a wave of books to Kalba’s beachgoers
Knowledge without Borders launches literary initiative’s fifth phase with Sharjah World Book Capital Office
Sharjah, January 29, 2020:The newly opened Mobile Beach Library the Kalba beach in Sharjah has added a great new attraction to this popular public destination in the emirate’s eastern region. A steady stream of beachgoers were seen exploring and relishing hundreds of books on offer last Thursday, when the library was inaugurated.
The fifth phase of a literary project that has been making books more accessible to all segments of society across all regions of Sharjah, the Mobile Beach Library initiative is the brainchild of Knowledge without Borders (KwB) and was initiated in celebration of Sharjah’s recognition as World Book Capital 2019.
Around 430 books spanning a wide range of genres and targeting all age groups are available at the Mobile Beach Library. The project, delivered in cooperation with the Sharjah World Book Capital Office (SWBCO) 2020 and the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), seeks to inspire a love of books and reading in Sharjah’s beachgoers.
Various cultural and entertainment activities such as beach games for adults and children’s games were organised as part of the library’s launch. Author Fadia Daas led a
story reading session of her book, Feelings of Mira, and children also participated in several artistic activities including drawing and colouring.
KwB also hosted its ‘A Coffee and a Book’ initiative, offering a free book to everyone who made a coffee purchase. The entire proceeds from the sale of coffee at the event went to The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), a Sharjah-based global humanitarian charity dedicated to helping refugees and vulnerable people worldwide.
Mariam Al Hammadi, KwB Manager, said: “Our aim, under the Beach Library initiative, is to reach out to readers everywhere with books and assist them with getting into a regular habit of reading. Books have a major role in enhancing our knowledge and broadening our horizons. By enabling people’s access to literature that spans a variety of topics and caters to all age groups, this initiative will step up efforts in realising Sharjah’s cultural vision that is committed to building a knowledge-based society.”
“Through our partnership with the Sharjah World Book Capital Office and Shurooq, we aim to extend our reach to all beaches across Sharjah, to enable more community members across the emirate discover the joys of reading,” she said.
The Mobile Beach Library will make its next stop at Hamriyah beach on Thursday, January 30, she added.
KwB was launched as an initiative by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
KwB aims to promote reading as a robust culture in every Emirati household and raise awareness among community members. The initiative seeks to further reinforce the status of Sharjah as UAE’s cultural capital, through organising intensive educational programs, lectures, school and library activities. It also emphasises the importance of reading for children’s intellectual development.
