Internationally acclaimed children’s author Rosemary Wells
shows children how to create beautiful books at SIBF 2019
Sharjah, 5 November, 2019:Rosemary Wells, the internationally acclaimed children’s author and illustrator from New York, USA, showed children in a packed forum at the Sharjah International Book Fair 2019 yesterday how she creates her award-winning books and told the children that working hard and being organised are her keys to success.
Having shown the fascinated children a short video about her studio and her writing processes, the author of the hugely popular Max and Ruby books told them they needed to accumulate 10,000 hours of painting practise to become an artist.
“I write books for boys your age, which takes a bit longer than the books I write for younger children,” Rosemary explained. “Each book takes between two months to two years depending on how complicated it is and very often each drawing in the book will have gone through many, many changes.”
Rosemary uses a lot of images of animals in her work, with her Max and Ruby series following the everyday adventures of sibling bunnies, curious three-year-old Max and bossy seven-year-old Ruby. “I love writing for children,” she says, “they are so innocent, and so curious and have imaginations that fly in a way that grownups don’t.”
Rosemary says she started drawing as a two-year-old and was, in fact, born an artist while finding her inner writer was about following her voice. She explains, “The most important thing for a writer is to follow their voice. For example, if you want to be a singer, there are many types of singer. You could be a jazz singer, soul, rock or opera. Writing is like that. You might be a fiction or non-fiction writer, a writer of teen novels or adult fiction. Whatever it is, you must follow your voice. Everyone has a talent; your job is to find and refine yours”
SIBF is one of the three most significant book fairs in the world. The 11-day literary and cultural extravaganza organised by Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) is being held at the Sharjah Expo Centre, from October 30 to November 9, under the theme ‘Open Books… Open Minds’.
