Children learn to draw comics from scratch at SIBF 2019
American cartoonist Eben Burgoon teaches children – and some adults – how to draw cartoons at the Sharjah International Book Fair
Sharjah, October 31, 2019:The most important lesson to learn before drawing a comic strip: “Always write down the dialogue that goes into the bubbles first, before you work on the picture,” said Eben Burgoon, American cartoonist who has created popular comics such as ‘B-Squad’, ‘EBEN 07’ and ‘Tiny Wizards’. “Otherwise, you may find that there is no space left for the dialogue, which is as important as the picture in a cartoon.”
Burgoon’s tips to children – as well as adults, going by the equal number of adults who participated in his workshop titled ‘Writing Comics’ yesterday at the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF)’s Comic Station, demystifying the process that goes into the creation of cartoon strips.
The audience was taken through the various stages of developing a basic idea into a cartoon strip by stages.
“Start with a main character, doesn’t matter whether it is good or bad or neutral,” he told the participants, while handing out a small bag with cards from which each of them picked their main character.
Burgoon asked them to imagine a storyline for the character they chose. Starting with the cover, he made them draw the character as they visualised it and put in a title for it.
More such programmes await visitors to SBIF 2019, which runs until November 9 at Expo Centre Sharjah under the theme ‘Open Books, Open Minds’.
