Abu Dhabi Choral Group set to bring Footloose: the Musical, filled with 80’s anthems to The Arts Center this summer

An evening full of high energy dancing and singing takes to the stage of The Red Theater in an original production of this Broadway hit

Abu Dhabi, June 9, 2019: Extending its successful fourth season, The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has announced a new series of performance this summer in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Choral Group (ADCG), Abu Dhabi’s longest running community theater group. The much loved Footloose! The Musical will be brought to The Red Theater on Thursday, June 13 at 7:30pm, Friday, June 14 at 2:30pm, Monday, June 17 at 7:30pm, Thursday, June 20 at 7:30pm, and Friday, June 21 at 7:30pm..

ADCG, which performed crowd-pleasing productions of Anything Goes, The Addams Family Musical, and Legally Blonde – The Musical, proudly presents their latest fully staged musical production filled with hits, such as Almost Paradise, Holding out for a Hero, and Let’s Hear it for the Boy, alongside the infectious title song..

The performance will take place following Eid al Adha break and promises to transport audiences back to the 80’s in an energetic theatrical show filled with singing and dancing to legendary pop anthems.

Based on the 1984 musical film directed by Herbert Ross and starring Kevin Bacon, the story follows Ren McCormack who moves to a small Midwestern town only to discover that dancing and rock music are illegal. Footloose! The Musical presents a classic story of overcoming grief and experiencing growth and emotional healing, symbolically represented by dancing, as well as persevering with determination to fight for the things we love most.

To the rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score, the original film soundtrack reached number one on the Billboard charts and sold over 15 million copies. Supplemented by dynamic new songs for the stage musical, Footloose! The Musical celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people and guiding them with an open heart and mind.

ADCG is the longest running amateur music group in the UAE. Established in 1977, the group performs two shows a year with a musical revue in the fall and a fully staged musical in the spring. Now in its 42nd season, ADCG has staged over 75 shows in its storied history. The group reflects a cross-section of Abu Dhabi representing more than 15 nationalities and languages spoken with company members that range from first time performers to seasoned veteran talents.

Commenting on the show, Executive Artistic Director at The Arts Center Bill Bragin, said: “Over the past few years, we’ve become fans of ADCG as one of most engaged community organizations on the cultural scene in Abu Dhabi. Our previous concerts with ADCG member Alana Barraj have demonstrated their audiences’ strong devotion for musical theater, and shown the enthusiastic support for friends’ and neighbors’ artistic pursuits. Following Eid in June is a perfect time to deepen The Arts Center’s commitment to showcasing UAE-based talent by inviting ADCG into Red Theater, one of the finest venues in the country,. We look forward to supporting them in bringing their production to even higher levels as ADCG brings this spirited and celebratory production to the stage.
