Visitors to Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival Celebrate Hag Al Laila
Hag Al Laila pavilion at SCRF teaches children about this sweet Emirati tradition
Sharjah, April 22, 2019 :The 11th edition of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival (SCRF), which is being held at the Sharjah Expo Centre, celebrated the Hag Al Laila, with its vibrant cultural itinerary. Hag Al Laila is one of the most popular and traditional festivals in the UAE and the Gulf, where children wear traditional clothes, carrying colourful bags, going door-to-door, singing in return for nuts and sweets.
Hag Al Laila, is also known as Gerga’aan, in Iraq, Kuwai, Bahrain and some cities in Saudi. The day is celebrated every year on the 15th of Shaaban, the month of the Islamic lunar calendar preceding Ramadan.
A dedicated section to Hag Al Laila celebrations at SCRF, showcased this traditional Emirati heritage. To kick off events on the same theme, was media personality Munther Al Muzakki. The programme comprised of several competitions on topics like heritage, literature, culture and community, with many winning big prizes.
Thus, aiming to add more cheer to the children’s celebrations, visitors to SCRF, enjoyed an array of colourful traditional activities, with small choir groups singing across the various halls and lobbies, reflecting the Emirati heritage, sending many adults to a trip down the memory lane, dating back to the 70s.
