Burjeel Day Surgery Center – Al Reem creates campaign for colorectal cancer awareness
Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, but is also completely treatable when detected early, so better awareness can save many lives
United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, April 09, 2019: Did you know that Colon Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the world? It is also the third most occurring cancer in the UAE, and around the world. Unfortunately, awareness of this deadly disease is still low among the residents of the UAE. But that is about to change.
Burjeel Day Surgery Center – Al Reem has created an awareness campaign for Colorectal Cancer, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Police Medical Services, which was officially flagged off on March 17, 2019 in Abu Dhabi. Saeed Al Junaibi, Head of Health Education, Abu Dhabi Police Medical Services, inaugurated the campaign by revealing a life-size inflatable Colon. He was joined by Moayad Al Fukaha, also from Abu Dhabi Police Medical Services.
Said Dr Emad Rahmani, Consultant, Gastroenterology at Burjeel Day Surgery Center, “Colorectal cancer, or colon/bowel cancer, as it is known, is more common than we can imagine. One of the biggest reasons for the high mortality rate is that it does not present any serious symptoms until it is too late. This makes diagnosis difficult, unless patients get regular check-ups.”
“Poor eating habits; excessive consumption of red or processed meat, obesity, smoking and sedentary life style is all risk factors for developing colon cancer. If someone experiences a non-explained rectal bleeding, change in bowel habit, persistent cramps, gas, bloating or weight loss; then he/she should talk to his/her doctor and consider a colon cancer screening test like colonoscopy. I recommend people to begin colon screenings in their early 40’s”, he added.
Burjeel Day Surgery Center– Al Reem is encouraging people to get regular check-ups. ““Colon cancer begins as small clumps of benign cells called polyps that over time become cancerous. Screening by colonoscopy is recommended to find the polyps before they become cancerous. There has been a significant decrease in the mortality rate for colorectal cancer due to the widespread uptake of colonoscopy. This is why we at Burjeel Day Surgery Center– Al Reem believe it is important for us to do our part is creating awareness as that could save lives,” says Dr Tarek Naseer, Specialist, Gastroenterology at Burjeel Day Surgery Center.
The campaign will run from March 15 to April 30, 2019.
