The First Esophageal Resection took place at Emirates Specialist Hospital in Dubai Healthcare City, Dubai

February 4, 2019 (Monday): The Medical Team in Emirates Specialty Hospital succeeded in the First Minimally Invasive (key hole) Esophageal Surgery.

The team removed the esophagus of a 50 year old Arab patient under the supervision of the UAE Professor, Doctor Ali Al Dameh (Surgical Consultant) in Emirates Specialty Hospital, Dubai. He is also a fellow of the Royal College of America and a former surgeon in Harvard University.

Professor Ali Al Dameh will hold a Press Conference on February 4, 2019 (Monday) in Emirates Specialty Hospital, Dubai Healthcare City, Dubai, to discussed about the surgery performed for the patient suffering from a cancerous tumor in the esophagus, which is one of the most serious cancers leading to death of the patient if not detected, diagnosed and eradicated. The life saving operation took 12 hours to complete and will give the patient a real chance to beat his cancer and return to his Normal life, work and family.

Dr. Ali Al Dameh said that esophageal surgery is one of the most complex surgical procedures, and carries the highest rate of possible complications, requiring the best available collaboration between the surgical, Anaesthesia and Intensive care teams. It is a reflection of the hospital capabilities and expertise to deal with life saving complex surgical conditions. In the past patients had to travel abroad to undergo such procedures. The traditional approach to open surgery may lead to surgical bruises that affect the tissues and muscles adjacent to the esophagus, thus prolonging recovery from surgery.

He pointed the patient is recovering well he will gradually be able to resume all his day to day activities. Professor Ali Al Dameh explained that there are limited University Centers in the United States of America (USA) and the west specialized this type of surgery, but now it is available in Dubai and the UAE.
