World Pasta Day: 20th Anniversary Celebrations in Dubai
UAE, Dubai, 25 October 2018: Earlier today, the global celebrations for the 20th anniversary of World Pasta Day began in earnest here in Dubai. Locally-based chefs including Chef Mohammad Orfali and internationally-renowned chefs, including Luca Marchini and Victoria Andrade, experts, nutritionists, dieticians and scientists assembled in Dubai to promote the quality, nutritious ingredient that has grown to be one of the world’s most-loved foods.
Organised by the IPO, (International Pasta Organisation), AIDEPI (Italian Association of Confectionery and Pasta Industries) and ITA (Italian Trade Agency), events and activities include a full day of debates at the Dubai Knowledge Park Auditorium, cooking sessions at the ICCA, (International Centre for Culinary Arts) and institutional initiatives such as the Healthy Pasta Meals Scientific Consensus Statement New Signatories, involving prominent experts and nutritionists including John Sievenpiper and Cyril Kendall.
Whilst cooking at the event, Chef Mohammad Orfali said, “Pasta is a food that unites many cuisines and it’s a common ingredient throughout the world – pasta for Italians, noodles for Asians, Macarona for Arabs, Fideua’ for Spanish, Pastitsio for Greeks, Macaroni for Americans, and so on! All you need is few ingredients – flour, salt, water and sometimes eggs – to make a fulfilling and tasty pasta dish. Pasta can unite people from all over the world, whether young or old, around the same table.”
According to a UN report, there has been a rise in world hunger for the third year in a row. The number of undernourished people has increased, returning to levels from almost a decade ago, and putting the Zero Hunger Development Goal by 2030 at risk. More than 820 million people suffer hunger and more than 150 million children have delays in their growth development. This is why pasta makers from all over the world have committed themselves to the second Power of Pasta, a global charity initiative donating around 2 million pasta plates to local organisations involved in the fight against hunger. As part of this initiative, the Emirates Red Crescent charity will receive a donation of over 40,000 pasta plates from AIDEPI. The Emirates Red Crescent will be joined by a team of staff and volunteers, headed by Mohammad Abdullah Al Haj Al Zarouni, Head of ERC’s Dubai Center.
The World Pasta Day will continue its celebrations with the Pasta Week at Italian Restaurants: 25 October to 1 November
To help support Italian pasta producers and make people aware of the different kinds and shapes of authentic Italian pasta, Pasta Week at Italian Restaurants will take place between 25 October and 1 November. Eight selected Italian restaurants in Dubai will be offering a special menu of pasta dishes to customers, who will also receive a complimentary pasta sample to cook at home, provided by six selected Italian producers – Pasta Berruto, Pastificio Fabianelli, Divella, Pastificio Di Martino, La Molisana and Rustichella – associated to AIDEPI. The eight participating restaurants are Bice, Gusto, Matto, Prego’s, Quattro Passi Ristorante, Ronda Locatelli, Trattoria Toscana, Vivaldi by Alfredo Russo.
World Pasta Day is part of the Week of the Italian Cuisine in the World, which is taking place in the UAE for the third year in a row. A number of events and activities will be hosted during this extended celebration starting on 25 October lasting for one month until 25 November, to profile the growing number of Italian producers successfully exporting their authentic Italian ingredients to the UAE.
