Critical hemorrhage case treated successfully in Zulekha Hospital Sharjah
Patient suffered blood clots in the pulmonary artery and in both legs joined by an intra-cerebral hemorrhage
Treating complex procedures such as this reinforces the country’s world-class healthcare system in line with the UAE Vision 2021
UAE, 03 September, 2018: Zulekha Hospital Sharjah has successfully treated a critical combined case after a patient was suffering from an intra-cerebral hemorrhage joined by a clot in the pulmonary artery and bilateral lower limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT) – i.e. a blood clot in both legs. 43-year-old Lopez Mattie Osena was admitted to the hospital after an overwhelming feeling of dizziness followed by right-sided chest pain associated with shortness of breath. The patient had been experiencing pain in his right leg and lower abdominal pain for three days before he was referred to Zulekha Hospital after other hospitals refrained in treating such a high-risk case.
Upon admission, the medical team at Zulekha Hospital Sharjah led by Dr. Maged Abulmagd, Consultant ICU, and supported by Dr. Amro Kabakbjy, Interventional Radiologist advised urgent tests. These included 2d echo, blood gases test, bilateral lower limb venous Doppler (venous ultrasound) and a CT brain scan (computed tomography) with d dimer (blood clot monitor), and later cerebral angiography to keep monitoring the brain hemorrhage after blood thinning drugs were given to the patient to help removing the clots. Afterwards, Dr. Amro led the operation of deploying an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter to prevent additional blood clots.
The treatment of such complex cases reinforces the positioning of the UAE in the innovative healthcare scene in the region. This supports the UAE Vision 2021 as providing world-class healthcare is one of the six key pillars featured in the National Agenda.
Dr. Maged commented on the case saying: “By embracing the hospital’s multidisciplinary care services we were able to leverage the necessary skills of world-class vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists and cutting edge Cath lab facilities. Together we succeeded in treating
the highly complex case which resulted in saving the life of Mr. Lopez. The case was not easy due to having to apply blood thinning drugs to clear the clots in a case where the patient had already suffered a severe cerebral hemorrhage.”
Dr. Amro added: “Through the combined efforts by each member of the medical team and the well-equipped facilities, we are delighted to see that Mr. Lopez recovered immediately following the procedure.”
Mr. Lopez underwent a two-hour procedure upon arriving to the ICU (intensive care unit) and was immediately relieved after the operation.
Expressing his thanks to the medical team at Zulekha Hospital, Mr. Lopez remarked: “I was in a lot of pain when I arrived at the hospital – the medical team was quick to act and helped me instantly by explaining my case and the treatment options available. I am very grateful that the team at Zulekha Hospital took on my case and as a result they saved my life. I am doing very well now.”
Dr Amro concluded: “We recommend that people in the UAE adopt a healthy lifestyles through sport, eating well and quitting smoking to help avoiding similar health issues.”
