Dubai – United Arab Emirates, 26 February, 2018: Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and President of Dubai Health Authority, DHA, His Excellency Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qatami, Chairman of the board & Director General of the Dubai Health Authority, accompanied by number of key figures and healthcare professionals attended today the opening ceremony of the 5th edition of The International Family Medicine Conference & Exhibition at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
In his opening speech, H.E. Humaid Al Qatami said: “As we commence this conference, we are pleased to extend our sincere gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and President of Dubai Health Authority, for his patronage of this important annual event and His Highness’s keenness to follow up on the progress achieved in the medical sector.”
He said: “The successive developments that have been witnessed and are being witnessed by the world in family medicine, indicates, beyond any doubt, that this medical specialty, in particular, has become the essential pillar of community protection and prevention of communicable and noncommunicable diseases.”
He added: “Family medicine is also the basis for the dissemination and development of community awareness with healthy lifestyles; this reflects an important fact that emphasizes the following idea: the family doctor is the closest to the community and is the key provider of any preventive and therapeutic policies or plans that health institutions operate on and implement.”
Prof. Zohair Sebai, Professor of Family and Community Medicine, Saudi Arabia said, “During the start of family medicine as a distinct department, malnutrition, infectious diseases, gastrointestinal disorders and chest infections were the most common diseases affecting populations. This was a direct result of ignorance, neglect and a general lack of understanding about the basic elements to good health. But today, public awareness about such diseases has greatly improved and people have become much more cautious about their health.”
“Today, the role of family physicians has greatly transformed, going beyond the traditional parameters of merely treating patients to providing comprehensive healthcare to all members of the community. As family physicians, we need to change the way healthcare is perceived and instead provide inclusive healthcare to everyone in the family. Our motto should be ‘health first’ rather than ‘patients first’. He added
On his part, Dr. Abdul Salam Al Madani, Executive Chairman of IFM and GFMSA said: “The annual International Family Medicine Conference aspires to promote the best practices in family medicine, deliver the most effective healthcare programs, enable a healthy environment for knowledge transfer and skills development of family physicians. We believe that a strong primary healthcare sector will help us in building healthier societies in the future.”
He added, “During the 3-day conference, IFM will host 63 speakers from the region and the world, and it will feature 14 scientific sessions and 3 specialized workshops.”
On the first day, the IFM conference focused on a number of important topics in family medicine including ways to bridge the gap between Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Obesity Management. Type 2 Diabetes is a long term metabolic disorder that is characterized by high blood sugar, insulin resistance and relative lack of insulin. Other topics discussed on the first day include, ‘Behavioral and Psychological symptoms of Dementia’, ‘Delirium’, ‘Rehabilitation challenges following a Stroke’, ‘Chest diseases’ and treatment of Respiratory conditions.
